Howdy, PennSanAntonio Alumni Blog Readers,

In the wake of Shannon Sauro's move to Sweden, I'm going to do my best to keep this blog up to date, and hope that one of you will step forward and help me out.  I'll be doing the same for our website, www.alumni.upenn.edu/club/sanantonio.

First of all, I wish you all happy and peaceful holidays and the best in 2013.

Second, I want to let you know that Elaine Ayala will be our 2013 luncheon coordinator.  Elaine's already mapping out a tentative noshing schedule for 2013, and we'll be posting it here and advising you by e-mail listserv.  Elaine will welcome your suggestions, of course.  As an early tipoff, we're planning another Ben's Birthday Bash for Thursday, January 17, at Youz Guyz Philly Cheesesteaks in Universal City.  And as we welcome Elaine to her new post, I want to thank Sheila Mayfield for her good and tireless work on our 2012 outings--or should I say, eatings.

More to come!

Best to all,

Bob Weidman

We invite you to participate in our events.  As you may know, we have monthly luncheons for Penn alumni in the San Antonio area on (usually) the last weekday of (almost) each month.  We try to move around to different areas of the city that are convenient to where we all work.  This month, we're having our luncheon on a Saturday.  This luncheon is a combined farewell to Shannon Sauro and Francis Hult, who have been invited to join the faculty of Lund University in Lund, Sweden as well as a celebration of our annual Freshman Sendoff.

Ivy Plus Happy Hour at Brio, La Cantera

As part of an expanded effort to step up Ivy-Plus activities in town, here’s notice on our first Ivy Plus Happy Hour:

Please mark your calendar for Thursday 7/5 6:00pm for a long-overdue happy hour gathering with fellow Ivy Leaguers and alumni from other top schools at Brio Tuscan Grille at La Cantera.  Brio offers an elegant outdoor patio reserved for the group and happy hour specials extended until 8:00pm.

The plan is to hold an Ivy Plus happy hour every first Thursday of the month and rotate locations monthly in various areas of San Antonio, so recommendations are highly encouraged.  Please contact Eric Hon (erichon99@hotmail.com) to RSVP for this happy hour event and indicate your alma mater.

News from the Global Alumni Network

Reposted...
Did you know… that FlackCheck.org, a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, was recently launched to monitor the accuracy of what major U.S. political players say in TV ads, debates, speeches and the like, while using humor to point out inaccuracies and deceptions?

The newest member of the FactCheck.org family, FlackCheck is not in it just for the laughs. Knowing that young voters tune in to late-night comedy shows to get their election news, FlackCheck is likely to reach a different, younger, audience than FactCheck.  Additionally, FlackCheck will help Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, expand on her research on human cognition and messaging. Focusing on the role of humor to reframe the messaging of deceptive ads, FlackCheck will be providing Jamieson with the data to study this topic.  For more information about the launch of FlackCheck.org, please visit APPC’s news release.

As a reminder, please register for the Global Alumni Network Retreat during the Penn Alumni Board and Council Meeting and Retreat this February 10 and 11.  If you are not able to attend, please feel free to extend the invitation to a fellow board member to represent your club.  Thank you.

The Penn Mascot - Did you know...

Penn Quaker

Did You Know…that five students make our mascot, the Penn Quaker, come to life? Tradition insists that the identities of the Quaker remains a secret. The job qualifications include an outgoing personality, an excessive amount of energy and enthusiasm, and most importantly, not taking oneself too seriously. And, like any top model, potential mascots should stand between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall. Joe Neary, who oversees the Quaker as Penn’s cheerleading coach, says performing as the mascot is all about the students being creative and developing a persona. The Quaker never fights other mascots (he is a Quaker), but he has played chicken with the Saint Joseph’s Hawk and tinkered with the Drexel Dragon’s tail. During the final basketball game of the season, any Quaker who is graduating takes off the mascot head and reveals his face so he can be recognized by the crowd.

Curious about some of the Penn Quaker's favorite campus haunts? Go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/universityofpennsylvania/sets/72157628856308667/ to view a slideshow.
